Re: Wanted: your opinion :)

What was your Jap 'box out of? If it's a 2.6L Scorpion 'box it'll be wide, 2.0L GE Scorpion and Sigma are narrow. All Jap boxes are Mitsubishi boxes, this includes Starion and Triton boxes. The only difference between a Scorpion Jap 5spd and a Triton/Starion Jap 5spd are thicker gears and needle rol...

Nice, that is identical to my Grandparents GJ they bought new, I think their plates were SEL ---. Same colour and grey interior. Theirs was auto 2.6 and Grandad got caught by a police helicopter doing 156kph on the Nullabour Plain. Not that fast you say? He was 67 y/o and towing a caravan, lol Haha...

Re: Wanted: your opinion :)

Either or, Scorpion-sourced Jap boxes are all the same in terms of strength. GE/GH boxes are 2" shorter than GJ/GK/GL boxes. Triton gearboxes are a Jap 5spd, just with stronger bearings and thicker gears. So yes, HOWEVER, they have shit ratios for a road car. 1st is so short it's useless, and i...

Re: Wanted: your opinion :)

Halfway right. All DOHC engines were narrowblock from factory, but not all SOHC were wideblock. As we know, all FWD are narrowblock, which includes SOHC 4G63s (in the first of the FWD Galants, in both turbo and NA format) and 16v SOHC 4G63s (in HH/HJ Galants). Some L200s/L300s also had a narrowblock...

Why not. What I'm driving will depend on any number of variables, will either be my Scorpion, a '00 Magna wagon or an '89 Pulsar, lol

Re: Wanted: your opinion :)

Out of all of the relevant Mitsubishi engines that have a B variant, the only one where the B could possibly denote belt drive is the 4G32B. All 4G63s/G63s are belt drive, all 4G54s/G54s are chain drive, all 4G52s/G52s are chain drive, and they all have B variants so it doesn't make much sense that ...

Re: 318 V8 into LC lancer??

The Toyota V8 is VERY wide due to the DOHC heads, they're a tight fit in a Sigma so there's no way you'd get one in a Lancer without major hackage.

I'm free whenever, so whatever you guys work out is fine by me. Scorp needs a fair bit more work before it's road-ready, so I'll be in the daily '00 Magna wagon.

Re: thinking 16v astron head

The picture of the HKS head I've seen looks similar to the Yamaha twin cam head used on old school Celicas (the real Celicas before they became fat pigs) but are more compact. ( Yamaha made/make all of Toyota's twin cam heads AFAIK, not just the 18RG/2TG heads. I know they were still providing head...

In my experience Astrons only last about 80,000km before they start using oil, can't say for 4G63's.

There is no such thing as a belt-driven Astron.

OP, it'll be an import 2L from a Sigma or an early GE Scorpion.

Hopefully insurance doesn't write it off on you, that would be a sad end for a very cool car :(
Good to hear the mrs is ok, in the end that's what matters. Cars can be replaced, people can't.

Re: how stong is a sigma 5spd?

I don't know how a 200kw turbo 2.6 compares to a 200kw 1GGTE or a 120kw 6MGE in terms of gearbox smashing ability, but if personal experience is anything to go by then they're a good, strong gearbox, but they aren't bulletproof. It'll take abuse better than any of the Mitsubishi 'boxes will but you ...

Re: Prevent me from doing something stupid

Depends on what strut you use, Galants use a 51mm strut (as do most 80's Toyotas, so there'll be a metric crapload of decent and not-so-decent replacement inserts available for that size strut), Starion/Conquest are 54mm.

Look into the Toyota/Lexus 1UZ-FE if you want a V8, should fall right under that limit being a 4L
Another option is a turbo 2.6, they're capable of good power when built properly and would probably be more than enough for such a light car.

Re: how stong is a sigma 5spd?

I haven't got much experience with hot Mitsubishis, most of the performancey stuff I've played with have been Toyotas, but from what I've seen a Jap 'box in good condition looks to be on par with or a little bit stronger than a late model JDM AE86 T50. Means it should be good for up to around 150-16...
