What are your favourite 8cyl, 6 cyl and 4cyl motors?

be interesting to see what people think are the best 4, 6 and 8 cyl motors in existance?

Mine are:

8cyl = 426 hemi/ which became the 511ci hemi used in drag racing (top doorslammers etc.)

6cyl = RB26DETT or 2JZGTE (sounds soooo goood) or even a ford xr6T motor on full noise sounds nice :wank:

4cyl = probs SR20DET (can build to handle sooo much powahh)

8 cyl = 1UZ-FE or maybe a LS1 Gen 3. They'd be my choices if I was to start working on a Kingswood.
6 cyl = HAS to be the 2JZ-GTE. Mostly cause my fav car of all time is the JZA80 Supra, and the 2JZ sounds awesome.
4 cyl = I will always like the 4G54, but been looking at the 4A-GE 5th gen 'Black Top'. A small 1.6L 20v DOHC engine, 121kW WITHOUT Turbo, and can rev to over 9000 rpm.

V8 = 385 series ford (429 460) can get nearly 600ci in a production block and the 429 semi hemi is the ultimate old school big banger


6 = Love my ford in lines and i like the lotus C36GET

V8 = none. never been in one never driven one. ever. . well i drone a mates VH bro' modore with a 383 in it, but it was running on 6 cylinders. sounded SO goodd though. woof woof woof lol. the thing would idle and my mate could get it sideways even on 6 cylinders lol. and you tap the accellerater and the whole car rocked

6 = RB26DETT for sure. they idle differently to everything else. they sound so mean. my friend has a R34 GTR series II NUR spec. took me for a sping down the old road in sydney in it!! $1000 a corner on tires, brake up grade, syspension, boost . . DROOL!!! round a corner flat out and the car was on rails!! went past 2 SS utes like they were standing still then hit the brakes at the next corner and the ass tryed overtaking us as the front brakes bit in. lol since that day i want to go round a track instead of going down 400 metres
closely followed be the 2JZ cos i'm pretty good at destroying engines, but i think i might struggle with breaking one of those indestructable engines lol.

4 = 4AGE cos they are so old and were so far ahead of their time.
and prob my fav. honda S2000's F20C 2.0L cos it can rev to 9000rpm and get 183kws from factory! my 3.0L twin turbo V6 300zx made 206 LOL

V8: can't go past a 426 hemi... So much history, but the new BMW v10's are absolutely amazing engines...
6: really can't go past a 2j, but patrol TB48's are pretty nuts aswell just look at the 10 second 2tonne patrols in Dubai...
4: Honda f20 pretty awesome atmo and gen1 4g63 and fj20 both tough, reliable great little engines

4: hmmm... 4g54s have torque... but my favourite is probaly the mazda ma 2l out of rwd 626s.. im putting one in my old 323 panelvan for my ex gf.. long story.. i had one fully worked in a 626.. commie killer

Decisions.... decisions

V8... 351 Cleveland ... I have yet to hear an engine that sounds better with the secondaries wide open.. The induction roar is pure heaven..

V8... Diesel.. GM8V92 T/A.. GMs' two stroke Diesels have a sound all their own, This power plants design can be traced back to 1937 (as the 71 series) and they can still hold their own against much more modern designs... A local GM guru had one working in an upper Hunter mine, Current model 650HP electronic Diesels could not pull away from the little 92.. it did blow a little soot out the back however

6 Cylinder... Chryslers' 265 Hemi. The best Naturally aspirated 6 ever produced in this country.. and still damn quick in E49 spec.... Falcon BA on Turbo would be the best forced induction (the RB30 wasn't made here but deserved an honourable mention).. As does Nissans' L28.. can be made into one tough engine..

4 cylinder.. Toyotas' 4AGE. specifically in AE82 Big port TVIS format... not the most powerful thing around, but damn fun and tough as nails... They are basically an improved copy of Fords' Cosworth BDA... 2.6 also gets an honourable mention.. Ive been in a very quick off roader with one in it..

Rotary... Turbo 13b... stupidly quick in a light car.

3 cyl.. Suzuki LJ50 Slow as a wet week, but sounded like an F1 car going up through the gears

6: RB26 DET (the best sounding engine at full noise. PERIOD!)

8 cyl dont really have a favorite for a 8 cyl maybe a big block chev
6 cyl RB26dett I have seen some massive numbers come from these motors
4 cyl SR20det I drive a SR20DE in a pulsar sss and it has got some power to it, did the clock 220km easily so an sr20det would just kick arse

V8 - 3500 Range Rover. Don't hate me for this but had one for a bit and out in the bush 4x4ing, giving it a flogging it sounded sweet.
6 - VQ35DE
4 - 2TG or 18RG Early DOHC Toyota Engines. Started co-driving in a TA22 Celica with 2TG and rallied a TA23 with 18RG. These engines are ridiculously tough for age/technology etc

The leyland 698 is a 6 cyl diesel

its a 5.7l inline 6 with a 98mm bore hence the 6-98 theres also a 4-98

but yes your right this engine IS NOT a performance engine

Care to notice how all these motor are robust, rarely go bang and make good power pretty much everywere(though a couple of these motors needs turbos)....yea im that kinda guy.

302 boss not much by todays stds but a good fast set up in there day
needed to be reved hard

6 cylinder has to be the 250 cc 6 cyl honda for the early 60s - for those that dont know it twin cam - 4 valve per cyl early pent roof head that reved around 20000
the same engine was bored to 297 cc to run in the 251 - 350 class the red line was knocked back to 18000
a class winner in both feilds

4 cyl well thats hard I like my 2.6 astron
but it would prob be the TZ 750 yamaha - a great motor for side car racing in there day
I remember always going to the last round of the superbikes at sandown
G Taylor and B frazer winning both the up to 500 cc and open class side car events on the same bike
just changing the 2 barrels and heads on the motor from the TZ 350 to TZ 250 about an 1 hours work
so it could fit both classes

That'd be the RC166. See my post for a great 4 cylinder Honda too. Yeah the TZ750 was a ripper too - Saw them at Adelaide International Raceway (does it still exist?) waaaay back. For sidecars the Suzi 750 triple was up there too (saw a few chaps get thrown off the back of those things on dirt tracks).

I use to race historic bikes and had a CB72 ( a road bike in race trim ) by one of the guys in our club had a CR93 , 1 of the 150 or so bikes that honda made and 1 of the 4 that made it to aust

and these bike all come to an end because the FIM chaged the rules 1 cylinder for 125 2 cylinder 250 and 350 and 4 cylinder for over 500

V8. For best in reality - it would have to be the LS2
(i hate Holdens, and LS1 had too many problems),
Its a great all around motor, great power stock, but throw a Turbo or 2, or blower on them and they can handle riduculous stuff too.

Also a big fan of the Humble 302, Have you seen what Gary Myers has done to his during burnouts at Summernats over the years!

But a Big Block Hemi would do me

6. 1JZ, for a humble basic motor, not to mention really cheap, huge power can be made from basic upgrades.
Throw a 2J head on and look out!
But yeah the 2JZ is crazy...
The RB26T is too expensive and highly strung...

4. The list cant be made for just one.
Old school - Dastun 1600, MK II Escort RS2000,

- Any of the Group B cars were jaw open stuff

New- it would have to be the 4G63T
Bulk HP stock, and Bullet proof...
Or in reality the SR20T

So many cheap upgrades that make crazy power continuosly, all over the world...

But my personal favorite would have to be a certain 1976 Honda Civic 1500 (my first car)
I got it from my cousin, I put that poor little motor through hell, put it into a tree, drove it through water, and i never serviced it, and it was still ticking away when i sold it to some young guys for a basher...

4Cyl....Definitely 4G32 with a #5 cam,twin 45s full noise in the forest

6: RB26DETT. just awesome. they can make so much power it rediculous.

Well seeing as how I am a little retro myself, I will pick some of the top engines from my hayday

V8 Probably the Repco V8 that won the World title for Jack Brabham.

6 cyl. Here I would go with the V6 motor from the Ford Capri. Only 3 litres, but could go like a jet and loved to rev.

4 cyl Well the Offenhauser was dominant engine in dirt track speedway cars for decades. But it was knocked off it perch by the humble VW flat 4. Decked out with full Scat internals the 2.2 litre VW could crack 10 second quarters. And this was done with a couple of Holleys or Webers. Would have loved to have seen one with a turbo.

OK Flame suit on. Will restrict my answer to engines I have experienced.

V8 - Chrysler 273 Only small but was a sweet engine. My 302C was rubbish in comparison.

6 - Jaguar AJ6 (3.6 litre DOHC 24 Valve) revy and indestructable. The Holden 186 motor was also nice. I didn't particularly like the Chrysler 265 and 245 (My Wife killed the 265 when she was on "L" plates).

4 - 4G32 (at 6000RPM held in Third up Bulahdelah Mountain with a HQ Monaro trying to keep up - Sweet). I also like the 4G64 in the Triton. The toyota engines I have had (3Y, 4Y, 3L Diesel and something with an O2 advantage though reliable, it would have been quicker to take a bus. Leyland mini engines need to be kept away from puddles (includes 850/1100/1275GT). BMW engines need an on-call mechanic and a speed dial to the parts shop (Never let your children talk you into keeping a BMW).

Sure there are lots of good engines out there. There are also good and bad ones of the same model. All I hope for is reliability followed by reasonable performance and economy.

V8: Any V8 tickles me in special places as far as sound goes but from an engineering stand point the Hartley Enterprises 2.8L and 3.0L H1V8's make my pants tight. 6cyl: Easy. Nissan S20 used in the 1971 skyline GT-R KPGC10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wC6mlV88UsI This video is sex for the ears. 2:10 makes me weak at the knees.

5cyl: Audi S1 group B rally cars foremost but i love the sound of my ford XR5 focus too.

4cyl: tricky one. Datsun L18 or L20 "grunta" motor with twin 45's flat knacker in the forest holds fond memories of growing up for me.
