Whats in the small metal box mounted in the Boot...
If you have ever wondered what was inside the metal box mounted in the boot as I had,
well 75wagon gave me one for the cause and i cut it open to have a look.
Its all very complex and interesting...

From memory it's a Vapor Separator canister.
Cheers.
Cheers.
Re: Whats in the small metal box mounted in the Boot...
My understanding is that its part of a system that draws vapours from the manifold and sends it back to the fuel tank.
What I do know is that it comes from the airbox (if you're still running the original one) then goes to the charcoal canister. From there, a line comes from the bottom of the canister that runs alongside the fuel lines all the way to just before the fuel tank where (in a galant at least) it passes through the floor of the boot and into that box. From there, it then goes to the fuel tank.
I worked this out installing my surge tank and efi pumps

Re: Whats in the small metal box mounted in the Boot...
it works backwards from that, it draws the vapour from the fuel tank, through the charcoal canister then into the manifold to be ignited through the combustion process.
its just pollution gear crap, which is needed on post 1977 cars (or older cars with newer engines) to pass engineers and blueslip etc. which is why i had to install one in my car >_<

My Wagon has one it it. It's a 9/75 model. It also has the carbon canister.dvsfin wrote:its just pollution gear crap, which is needed on post 1977 cars (or older cars with newer engines) to pass engineers and blueslip etc. which is why i had to install one in my car >_<
I was always confident that it works like that. But I always thought it had some kind of check valve or something in it, so if the car rolled over the fuel didn't leak out. Obviously I was wrong?dvsfin wrote:it draws the vapour from the fuel tank, through the charcoal canister then into the manifold to be ignited through the combustion process.
The thing I don't get about that box is why it has a Mitsubishi Electric sticker on it?
Dave...

But im sure this did have a check valve...
And yeah I agree, the Mitsu Electric threw me too...??
Was it the casing for the first Mitsubishi washing machine...??

Now that makes a bit more sense. It does seem somewhat unnecessary thoughdvsfin wrote:it works backwards from that, it draws the vapour from the fuel tank, through the charcoal canister then into the manifold to be ignited through the combustion process.

The problem is on a hot day your petrol tank can develop quite a lot of pressure.Tj. wrote:Now that makes a bit more sense. It does seem somewhat unnecessary though
Instead of having 0-psi BEFORE the fuel pump, you now have 10-15 psi. Add the extra 5-psi the pump will generate and see what happens to your float level in your carby.
Even the return line will be pressurized.
The Vapor separator and charcoal canister are actually useful, unlike a lot of other "pollution gear".
Cheers.

Hmmm you could be onto something there!
Re: Whats in the small metal box mounted in the Boot...
I actually had a fuel tank in my sigma wagon inflate so much that it bulged out and punctured the side of the tank. The one way valve to vent air from the tank started working in reverse and caused the damage. Wasn't too happy to have to find a new tank at the wreckers to replace it. It's not just a random piece of pollution gear.
