difference between cams

Post by shuggy »

ok so i know there are different cams, but what do they mean haha?
just found a hydraulic cam for sale for 80 bucks for my g32b, and just wondered what the differenc is between my stock and the hydraulic one? if any?
i know there are hydraulic rockers, i know how they work, but can i use existing rockers on a hydraulic cam?

I wouldnt think there is any difference between mechanical and hydraulic lifters

The cam lobes/rockers still run on the same type of slipper bearing surface and theres no reason why it would have different timing

I think the point here.. is whats the difference in the actual camshaft

The camshaft doesnt change, only the rockers with regards to hydraulic lifters, and manually adjustable tappets

[EDIT]
Just came across this:
Rule of thumb, a solid lifter cam requires 10 degrees more of duration to operate in the same power curve as a hydraulic. From that point, a 220 degree hydraulic cam operates in the same rpm range as a 230 degree solid lifter unit.
That is, assuming the EXACT same camshaft is used for the different types of lifters.
Hydraulic lifters are slower to open the valve due to the damping from the oil.. hence the different timing

ok mate here a quick reveiw of what you havent learned yet
there are serveral different types of cams for eg
flat tappet
mechanical
hyd
hyd roller
mechanical roller
all the these cams are different ,different in the lobe shape, size and what thay
do
yes you can use a hyd roller with mechanical rockers but you can also kiss
you engine goodbye once you start it
mate im not being a smart arse here its just if you dont understand basic engine theory
there no point trying to learn on a forum
why not just have square lobes that way you can get perfect timing events?????
its not that simple and people spend many many years trying to understand cams!
all the average person can do is pick something thats tried and tested and bolt her
in time it and enjoy!
hope this helps without offending :o

Have a good read of this (and all his articles for that matter) http://www.grapeaperacing.com/tech/valvetrain.pdf
Explains the pros and cons and practical uses for hyd vs mech vs roller etc.
Has all the info most people will ever need to know about cams.
