What motor is this ?

Post by davetrees »

It's in the GB wagon wreck I recently acquired. Obviously it's a belt-drive, and not original, but is it a Saturn ?

I couldn't see a "4G3x" in the usual spot near the starter (but it's pretty grungy down there). Seems to have "ZB-something" cast into the block on the exhaust side.

Do the bulges down the sides of the block house balance shafts or something ? Don't recall seeing anything similar before .... but I am totally unfamiliar with the belt-drive motors.

Am I mistaken that this would be the 4G32 GS engine? Might pay to get the pistons out and even the guts of the dizzy if it is...

Nope, its the engine that's in the GB wagon.

The block of one of the 2 GSR motors has ended up as the basis of Steve Ashton's new rally engine (athough I have the pistons - he's running some massive overbore I believe) and the other one I will be pulling from the old rally car this weekend.

What car is Steve Ashton running these days?
I remember watching him compete in his VR4 when I was a kid many years ago.

Steve & Ro are running a GA Galant ...

virtually identical to Dinta & Kate Officer's car ...

and Simon Crane from Lovells has one too !

Both Dinta's & Steve's cars are bored & stroked about as far as you can take a 4G32 (Historic regs require using original block & head). Serious bits of kit ....

Glad to hear that Dinta and Steve are still rallying. Both are very quick drivers.

They both pretty much run only in HRA events, plus events like the Classic Outback Trial & the like. The rest of us have trouble getting anywhere near them !

Had the same block markings on my 4g32b that came out if my fwd 85 colt hatch. Converted it to rwd and it went hard. Leaked a lot tho
