Project Scorpion/Galant GSR has begun
So in the middle of 2012 I was looking for a good reliable first car for my Son, of course it had to come with a healthy dose of cool. As I have always been around all things JDM and particulary Mitsubishi we were left with little choice.
This 1979 GE Scorpion came up for sale, was well priced and was running and registered to boot.
He turns 16 in June 2014 so we have plently of time to get this one up to spec. Due to learner driver laws he can not have any performance mods for a few years so it will remain pretty much stock but with EFI fitted to the 2.6lt 4G54.
Sadly the deeper we dug into it the more rust we found
I have secured a very tidy shell with a full respray in a slightly lighter blue at a pretty good price, so we will basically re-shell the runner into this new body.
Pics soon but I can tell you he is scoring even more technology, not only have I scored a pair of NOS factory electric mirrors for this to go along with his power steering and air con but the new shell has been fitted with electric windows and central locking.
This is the lighter blue shell, fancy chrome bits too [tongue] Should have the engine and box out of the other shell tonight and then this one can move back into the shed
These are the wheels he picked. Once cleaned up, polished and painted they should look pretty cool I think

Did you end up keeping those PWS wheels??
The owner wasn't happy with the look of them on the car??

Ah, the turbos, they are on my hardtop. Boy didn't get a choice in the matter, lol. I sold my steelies and didn't like the wheels I replaced them with so the turbos got fitted.
He has chosen the wheels now fitted to it anyway

I am old and fat these days, lol. Nah just got home from a morning meeting and it is fucking hot out in the shed already
Re: Project Scorpion/Galant GSR has begun
This explains why you were so angry at me
You should put something epic in the rust bucket shell, especially if it is going to be scrapped. Junk ones are worth saving.

Angry is the wrong work Monk, just hate to see good ones become track hacks.
Funny you should mention it, I do have the option to buy a cheap 6G74 DOHC, thinking about it

Mine isn't a good one, I think that's what got everyone off on the wrong foot. It is a destined for scrap bog machine with a lot of good bits on it
Glad you found a good shell to rebody yours into though, they are getting hard to find!

Re: Project Scorpion/Galant GSR has begun
Stripped the donar shell of all its worth, sold of some bits including the L/H 1/4 panel, lol
Good shell is in the shed waiting for us to begin on his heart transplant and some interior bits and pieces.
This is a rendering of the desired end product [biggrin]
Progress
Engine, gearbox, tailshaft, new springs and twin carbs fitted.
That is about it for the oily bits, the rest is interior, cooling and wiring over the next few weeks. Then make it pretty and it is all done.

Re: Project Scorpion/Galant GSR has begun
Okay, so the Scorpion is alive but the wiring is giving me massive head aches.
It had an alarm fitted before and it has messed it up something shocking.
As soon as you connect the battery it cranks over but won't fire. It also lights up the parking lights? There is no power to the coil until you put the key into the run position.
So what I have been doing to get it into a running state is manually applying the solenoid wire to the starter motor, obviously this is far from practical and any advise would be welcomed.

That wiring really killed it for a while. My Son lost interest, which he never really had, and bought a very tidy 2004 Magna VRX AWD.
The Scorpion sat in the back of the shed pretty much untouched until my Galant was defected.
This made me pull a heap of the good stuff from the Galant and fit it to the Scorpion.
Engine was stripped, bored 60 thou and fitted with new bearings.
The Scorpion ( GS/R Galant Λ ) should see the road by the end of April.
All our cars have names and I would like to introduce you to Hank (Scorpio)

Y was the Galant defected??????
I like the choice of wheels on the Scorpion btw (tho I'd personally aren't a fan of blacked out bonnets)

Cheers guys.
Galant was defected for a minor oil leak at the rocker cover and suspected wheel/tyre fouling on body work or suspension.
In SA, any reported oil leak is a full, over the pits inspection and sadly the Galant would not have passed due to all the mods I have done.
So I am in the process of a full make over, engineering and getting the defect cleared but that will be a long process, like maybe into 2019. The Scorpion will keep me entertained in the mean time and is just about as rare to these on the road these days.
