Forgive me for making a new topic about this but my laptop (along with service manual) is gone.

I'm just trying to remove the head from my dead 2.6 and got stuck with the timing chain. Where do i find the tensioner and how do i loosen it?

hey, when removing a 2.6 head you dont have to touch the tensioner, just make sure its set up on TDC and cable tie the cam sprocket to the chain. theres a little metal bracket that the cam sprocket sits on while yo remove the head

Shouldn't have to touch that to get the head off mate?

-Remove the nut from cam gear
-Slide cam gear toward front of vehicle enough to slide off cam
-Gently rest it down on to the flat bit of metal mitsu conveniently provided.

The timing chain tensioner is operated by the oil pump, so unless your trying to remove the head with the engine running shouldn't have any troubles; although it does have a pre-tensioner spring behind it.

EDIT: Hmm... Zip tie around the Cam gear... never thought of that before, top idea!

well i have everything out of the head including camshaft, but the sprocket wont come out.
i figured loosening the chain would get it off faster

also the sprocket doesnt go down enough for the chain to come off

See the little metal bracket beneath the cam gear?

Sit it on that, then just lift the head off over it.

i didnt think it would be that easy.. will try that in the morning

slight problem.. the head wont lift over it

the distributor gear which is attached to the cam gear has nowhere to go
do they seperate or am i just a master at failing simple tasks?

Yeah mate, they surely do.

From memory they to take some slight persuading to get apart due to the locating pin

mate thay do ,the head will lift off over the timing chain and sprocket
whats the actuall problem here is it that you cant separate the gear from
the cam?
or does it feel like the head wont lift?????
have you taken out the two 8mm bolts in the front,either side of timing
gear ?

So I decided to get a soft hammer out and see what would happen..

barely even tapped it and it came off

surfaces of the valves and pistons have seen better days thats for sure
