Can someone please give me a simple answer to my question.

I just bought a 4G52 2.0ltr how do I know if it is a wide block?

Remember simple answer.

Many thanks.

All 2.0L engines (4G52) are narrow.
All 2.6L engines (4G54) that ran an auto are narrow.

Cheers.

I am assuming this was a serious question, so I will give a serious answer.

USE THE SEARCH BUTTON.
I did a quick search and found 3 threads where this is mentioned at length, here is one;

Yes it was serious question.

Every where I looked had different options and refufered to cars of different varieties , different tail shafts. Different sigmas . I would not know one sigma from another. I am new to Lancers.

Thanks for the link.

May just keep the 4speed. Saves the brain cells.

Thanks Bundo,
We are currently trying to build up some threads with more direct answers and information.

We will endevour to make a thread, including pics that answers this very question.

Cheers mate

As said
4G52 (2.0L) all narrow (auto and man).
4G54 (2.6L) Auto are narrow, manual are wide
EXCEPT Magna 4G54, all those are narrow.

Apparently there are some 2.6L blocks from a certain era floating around that are drilled for both wide and narrow, but ive only heard rumours of these and from bolt patterns this would be a little difficult i thought.....so dont quote me on it.

cheers Matt

Measure the lower box bolts - As 2.6l and 2l can come in wide or narrow.

Narrow - 310mm
Wide - 330mm

i'm skeptical but this may be true.

wide or narrow block the simple way to check is measure the distance between the dowels that locate the bell housing. One is like 315 the other is like 330mm.

is wide or narrow block better there's talk of the wide being tougher block if you wanna work it they have some exta meat etc but there basically same same. The key is getting the right block to suit your gearbox or visa versa. I've seen some very dodgy stuff done by trying to make one fit the other...

The block are essentially the same apart from the flywheel as far as i'm aware. The gearbox's for the wide are apparently a little stronger due to them being suited for the 2.6 vs the 2L or smaller for the narrow bolt up. Also the 2L are definately all narrow and 2.6L autos were all narrow except for the starion 4g54 and maybe the scorpion but i'm not positive about the scorp. I know the scorp auto is different to the sigma but I'm not positive about the bolt up. And all the 2.6 manuals are wide. I'm pretty sure you can tell if the block 2.6L block is narrow or wide from the engine no too.

There is a difference in the blocks but not between the wide and narrow but between the Jap casting and the Australian casting.
The Aussie block is casting is a little thinner than the Jap block.
Because the Jap casting is a little thicker it helps stop the issue of cracking between the welsh plugs on the exhaust side of the block.
All scorpions used Jap blocks because they were an import.

All Auto scorpions, to the best of my knowledge, used narrow blocks.
The imported Auto Starions ("GSR's" and "Wide Body's") that run 4G54's MIGHT be wide but I don't know for sure.
NB: The imported 4G54 Starion blocks also have piston oil squirters.

Cheater can confirm this but I believe the output shaft is thicker in the wide block gearbox.

There are also 3 other "Wide" gearboxes that are built a little stronger than even the standard Sigma Jap 5-speed.

1. The Triton 4G54 2WD gearbox.
2. The Pajero 4G54 2WD gearbox.
3. The Starion 4G63 gearbox.

Cheers.

A Lancer Hatch or 2 litre Sigma will have the box you need (as long as they are 5 speed to start with anyway).

Dave...

As far as I'm aware, these were engines supplied to dealers for change overs - in cases where it wasn't practical to have both on hand.

Does anyone know if there are any differences in the output ratios between these gearboxes?

Any differences in load ratings for their bearings, or thickness in the gears?
