1.4 / 1.6 Into a Ge Wagon
Hi everyone,
me and a mate a buying a manual Ge wagon with a stuffed motor. we are aiming at building it for one purpose.. Economy. What were thinking is dropping a reletively small galant motor in it. would it move the wagon without too much strain? power is not a goal here, just enough to go say through the adelaide hills will do even if we have to drop her down a gear or two. so we are faced with a few questions... Are the 1.3/1.4/1.6 Motors bolt in and up to a 2ltr manual box?. car was originally 2ltr. will we have many problems regoing it in S.A?, are there any prefered engine types as in chain vs belt drive and lastly will stock form be better or a carby upgrade advisable for fuel economy?. the insparation for this is we want a car we can go long distances say to adelaide, which is close to 500 kms from here, using as little fuel as possible (both of us are almost on our P Plates) and we'd like to make the car out of a sigma. GE's were available with a 1.6 Saturn so rego would be no problem. On the fuel economy side going for the smallest engine is not always the best. I think for long distance driving at about 100kph I am pretty sure you will find the 2.0 the most economic. The 2.6 can get kinda thirsty at speed and I think the 1.6 would really struggle

How much $$$ do you have to spend on this??
Rego wont be a problem as (havnt seen a wagon) you could get the GE's in a 1.6lt anyway. Known as a Galant not Sigma.
Why not a newer 4g63 non turbo motor. Still a 2lt, DOHC and EFI.
Galant is chain driven and Colt is belt driven. Gearbox will bolt to them.
Rego wont be a problem as (havnt seen a wagon) you could get the GE's in a 1.6lt anyway. Known as a Galant not Sigma.

This is a separate project to my 2.6 Gold GE SE Turbo Project. So the 2ltr would be the best for economy then? as thats the main goal here is maximum ecomony less fuel used = the better lol money wise what ever goes. ill rebuild what ever goes in there myself

got he 4g52, 1.6 has no guts so you need high revs to pull thru the hills and they chew juice under accelleration at high revs, my car gets about 11k/l at 103 km/hr, but at 110 it gets about 9 k/l, 120 gets about 8, 130 about 6, and 140 about 4 haha. partially bad mixture but you get the drift.
4g51 is too hard to get parts for and the car didnt come with it in australia so may have rego problems
4g54 is very torquey and will pull thru the hills no worries but at high speed with a stock diff it will again chew gas..
2.0 4g52 is definately your best bet

I found that a 2.6L actually used less fuel than the 2.0 at highway speeds.. but for one specific reason, gear ratios.
The 2.6 can comfortably cruise around at 2,000rpm.. which is quite efficient if you're light on the throttle, and especially so on the highway at 2,700rpm
When I swapped to a 2.0L I found it couldn't handle 5th gear as there was just no torque. Highway trips in 4th would give about the same amount of torque but with higher rpm comes more fuelage.
What diff ratio does the wagon have, and is there a lower option available?

My 2c.
2.6L auto engine (narrow block like your 2.0L)
Your 2.0L 5-speed box will bolt straight up to it.
GH Scorp diff (jap 10 bolt).
Going from a 3.89 ratio Borg diff to a 3.33 ratio Jap diff will save a bit of fuel when you are just cruising.
GH front struts so you have a bit better braking. The GE's suffer a little from brake fade.
Optional but in my opinion, on long trips, braking from higher speeds, it's worth it.
M6 or M7 Magna head.
They flow better and will allow your engine to breath easier.
As for carbies, cheap and easy, 32/36 or 34/34 webers.

Correction - yes they did. Standard engine for the GE Series, GL model Sigma was the 1.85 litre engine and 4 speed manual transmission. Optional was the 2litre with automatic transmission, or 5 speed manual. Check the brochure and the service manual which confirms this.

If this vehicle is going to be registered in South Australia there will be no issue with engine fitment as long as you stay between 1.6 and 2.6 and it is a Mitsubishi engine

4g63 from fwd galant, sigma narrow 5 spd and scorp 3.3 diff.... Would be a bit more work than a 4g54/52....
Or just get a 4g54, rebuild the standard carb properly, use a 5spd and tallest diff you can find. Most sigmas are a bit crap of fuel because their carbies are stuffed and are generally running in a very poor state of tune.

my 2 cents. 4G52 2.0L with upped compression for better efficientcy and a well tuned EFI wih small injectors for better tuning. well sized diff. . and good ignition setup should be good. .
